Income Tax Return Processing – Message from the Australian Taxation Office

by Warren Kruger on November 15, 2008

We are currently receiving a greater number of income tax returns than usual for this time of year.

Many of these returns are being processed well within service standards however some returns need further information before they can be finalised which can result in processing delays. We are also receiving a large number of enquiries regarding these returns.

Given our current commitment to finalising original income tax returns, there will be delays in the processing of amendment requests and in returning calls about the progress of returns during this time.

We will action original returns in the order they are received. We are not able to give priority to people calling to check on the progress of their returns unless there is genuine hardship.

To help us process your clients’ returns as soon as possible:

  • reassure your clients that we are processing their returns as quickly as possible and explain that enquiries to check on the progress of returns can contribute to delays in processing – if full information is provided and the refund is delayed, interest will be paid, and

  • obtain all necessary information before lodging returns – we are receiving unexpected numbers of amendment requests for original returns that have been lodged recently.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Acting Assistant Commissioner
